The problem
Brackish RO is usually limited to 70–85% recovery by scaling in the concentrate. For inland plants, getting rid of the remaining brine, by thermal treatment, evaporation ponds or deep wells, can be the largest cost of the whole plant.
Benefits
- Overall recovery raised to around 95%
- Brine volume cut by about 80%, so disposal energy and costs fall dramatically
- A smaller, more concentrated brine for thermal treatment or salt recovery
- Strongest when designed into new plants, and still worthwhile as a retrofit
Application
Sits on the RO concentrate, recovering water to potable-range quality and leaving a much smaller brine. Selective separation can also recover specific salts for reuse instead of discharging them.
