BrightGuard
Recycled fibre, without the baggage.
The problem
Recycled fibre brings metals into the mill. As internal loops close they accumulate, and their effects reach well beyond bleaching: into equipment, process chemistry, product quality and the effluent.
Benefits
- Lower corrosion and deposit risk across pipework, chests and clothing
- More stable wet-end chemistry and additive performance
- Less bleaching chemical wasted and lower chelant use
- Fewer specks and better brightness stability
- Cleaner sludge, more disposal options, easier discharge compliance
Application
A kidney on an internal loop, such as the deinking loop: it draws off water, removes the metals and returns it. Applies across packaging and white grades.
Where metals cause problems
Corrosion
Dissolved copper and iron accelerate corrosion of steel pipework and equipment, and feed the bacteria behind microbially induced corrosion.
Deposits and specks
Iron and manganese oxidise and drop out on wires, felts and pipework, and show up as specks and discolouration in the sheet.
Wet-end interference
Multivalent metals disrupt sizing, retention aids, dyes and optical brighteners, so additive doses creep up.
Bleaching and brightness
Transition metals decompose bleaching chemicals and drive brightness loss and reversion.
Sludge and discharge
Metal loads can restrict sludge disposal routes and put discharge consents at risk.
Chelant cost
Chelants mask metals rather than remove them, adding cost plus nitrogen and COD to the effluent.
